Censored Society of Hong Kong

A conceptual installation exploring the history of the lost country house De Duno in Gelderland. Combining a physical maquette, archival animation, and an augmented reality prototype, the project reimagined the historic hotel and made its presence visible once more.

I developed the concept, designed the maquette, produced the animations, and developed the AR prototype.

About

My Role

As part of a third-year CMD project at Avans University of Applied Sciences, Amnesty International asked us to design a physical interactive installation to make journalistic data about the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong accessible to a broad audience. The aim was to raise awareness and encourage action against human rights violations.

The exhibition combined storytelling, symbolism, and interaction to let visitors personally experience censorship and surveillance, making the political reality of Hong Kong tangible and relatable.

The result was The Censored Society of Hong Kong, a traveling exhibition divided into three spaces:

  • Room A – Provide Context: A timeline with audiovisual content and lenses that immerse visitors in key events and contrasting perspectives of China (red) and Hong Kong (yellow).
  • Room B – Steered Vision: An environment where spatial layout and guided pathways symbolize censorship, forcing visitors to actively search for the hidden pro-democracy perspective.
  • Room C – The Control Room: A shock factor finale centered on surveillance, where visitors’ presence is tracked by cameras and added to a list of “suspects,” culminating in a Lennon Wall where they can leave anonymous messages of support.
